इन्द्रस्य वाजिनो वाहा हस्तिनो ऽथ रथास् तथा ॥
इच्छाम्य् अहम् इहापूर्वं वाहनं ते सुराधिप ॥
यन् न विष्णोर् न रुद्रस्य नासुराणां न रक्षसाम् ॥
वहन्तु त्वां महाराज ऋषयः संगता विभो ॥
सर्वे शिबिकया राजन्न् एतद् धि मम रोचते ॥
नासुरेषु न देवेषु तुल्यो भवितुम् अर्हसि ॥
सर्वेषां तेज आदत्स्व स्वेन वीर्येण दर्शनात् ॥
न ते प्रमुखतः स्थातुं कश् चिद् इच्छति वीर्यवान् ॥
शल्य उवाच
एवम् उक्तस् तु नहुषः प्राहृष्यत तदा किल ॥
उवाच वचनं चापि सुरेन्द्रस् ताम् अनिन्दिताम् ॥
अपूर्वं वाहनम् इदं त्वयोक्तं वरवर्णिनि ॥
दृढं मे रुचितं देवि त्वद्वशो ऽस्मि वरानने ॥
indrasya vājino vāhā hastino 'tha rathās tathā ||
icchāmy aham ihāpūrvaṃ vāhanaṃ te surādhipa ||
yan na viṣṇor na rudrasya nāsurāṇāṃ na rakṣasām ||
vahantu tvāṃ mahārāja ṛṣayaḥ saṃgatā vibho ||
sarve śibikayā rājann etad dhi mama rocate ||
nāsureṣu na deveṣu tulyo bhavitum arhasi ||
sarveṣāṃ teja ādatsva svena vīryeṇa darśanāt ||
na te pramukhataḥ sthātuṃ kaś cid icchati vīryavān ||
śalya uvāca
evam uktas tu nahuṣaḥ prāhṛṣyata tadā kila ||
uvāca vacanaṃ cāpi surendras tām aninditām ||
apūrvaṃ vāhanam idaṃ tvayoktaṃ varavarṇini ||
dṛḍhaṃ me rucitaṃ devi tvadvaśo 'smi varānane ||
'If you grant me this, I shall be at your disposal. Indra had steeds to bear him, and elephants, and chariots. I desire, O lord of the gods, that you should have a vehicle never possessed before — one that belonged neither to Vishnu, nor to Rudra, nor to the asuras, nor to the rakshasas, O lord. Let a company of most worthy rishis, joined together, bear you upon a palanquin. This is what pleases me. You must not liken yourself to the asuras or the gods. You draw off the strength of all beings by your own power the moment they behold you. There is no one strong enough to stand before you.' Shalya continued: 'Addressed thus, Nahusha was greatly delighted. And the lord of the gods spoke to that woman of faultless features: "O lady of most excellent complexion, you have spoken of a vehicle the like of which was never heard of before."'

This passage (5.15.11-15) continues the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even against the backdrop of an unavoidable war.
