ततः प्रज्वाल्य विधिवज् जुहाव परमं हविः ॥
बृहस्पतिर् महातेजा देवराजोपलब्धये ॥
तस्माच् च भगवान् देवः स्वयम् एव हुताशनः ॥
स्त्रीवेषम् अद्भुतं कृत्वा सहसान्तरधीयत ॥
स दिशः प्रदिशश् चैव पर्वतांश् च वनानि च ॥
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च विचीयातिमनोगतिः ॥
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण बृहस्पतिम् उपागमत् ॥
अग्निर् उवाच
बृहस्पते न पश्यामि देवराजम् अहं क्व चित् ॥
आपः शेषाः सदा चापः प्रवेष्टुं नोत्सहाम्य् अहम् ॥
न मे तत्र गतिर् ब्रह्मन् किम् अन्यत् करवाणि ते ॥
शल्य उवाच
तम् अब्रवीद् देवगुरुर् अपो विश महाद्युते ॥
tataḥ prajvālya vidhivaj juhāva paramaṃ haviḥ ||
bṛhaspatir mahātejā devarājopalabdhaye ||
tasmāc ca bhagavān devaḥ svayam eva hutāśanaḥ ||
strīveṣam adbhutaṃ kṛtvā sahasāntaradhīyata ||
sa diśaḥ pradiśaś caiva parvatāṃś ca vanāni ca ||
pṛthivīṃ cāntarikṣaṃ ca vicīyātimanogatiḥ ||
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa bṛhaspatim upāgamat ||
agnir uvāca
bṛhaspate na paśyāmi devarājam ahaṃ kva cit ||
āpaḥ śeṣāḥ sadā cāpaḥ praveṣṭuṃ notsahāmy aham ||
na me tatra gatir brahman kim anyat karavāṇi te ||
śalya uvāca
tam abravīd devagurur apo viśa mahādyute ||
'Farewell, then.' Then Brihaspati, endowed with great energy, kindled the fire according to rule and offered into it the finest oblations, so as to discover where the king of the gods might be found. And having made his offerings, O king, he said to Agni: 'Find Indra.' Swifter than thought, he searched everywhere — the directions and the intermediate directions, the mountains and the forests, the earth and the sky — and returned to Brihaspati in the twinkling of an eye. And Agni said: 'Brihaspati, nowhere in these places do I find the king of the gods. Only the waters remain to be searched. I have always held back from entering the water. I have no access there.'
