यत् तद् विराटनगरे श्रूयते महद् अद्भुतम् ॥
एकस्य च बहूनां च पर्याप्तं तन् निदर्शनम् ॥
एकेन पाण्डुपुत्रेण विराटनगरे यदा ॥
भग्नाः पलायन्त दिशः पर्याप्तं तन् निदर्शनम् ॥
बलं वीर्यं च तेजश् च शीघ्रता लघुहस्तता ॥
अविषादश् च धैर्यं च पार्थान् नान्यत्र विद्यते ॥
संजय उवाच
इत्य् अब्रवीद् धृषीकेशः पार्थम् उद्धर्षयन् गिरा ॥
गर्जन् समयवर्षीव गगने पाकशासनः ॥
केशवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा किरीटी श्वेतवाहनः ॥
अर्जुनस् तन् महद् वाक्यम् अब्रवील् लोमहर्षणम् ॥
yat tad virāṭanagare śrūyate mahad adbhutam ||
ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca paryāptaṃ tan nidarśanam ||
ekena pāṇḍuputreṇa virāṭanagare yadā ||

ity abravīd dhṛṣīkeśaḥ pārtham uddharṣayan girā ||
garjan samayavarṣīva gagane pākaśāsanaḥ ||
keśavasya vacaḥ śrutvā kirīṭī śvetavāhanaḥ ||
arjunas tan mahad vākyam abravīl lomaharṣaṇam ||
If you do not make peace with the Pandavas, an overwhelming calamity will befall you. Slain by Bhimasena's mace, you shall lie at rest. Truly, when you see the host of the Kurus laid low by Bhima like a great forest torn up by its roots, then you will remember these words of mine.' The passage 5.58.26-30 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace already unfolds against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Sanjaya stands at the center here. Dharma reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through fidelity to one's promises, and through the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
