Vaishampayana said: 'Having heard these words of Sanjaya, the king, endowed with the eye of wisdom, weighed this speech in terms of its merits and defects. And having carefully reckoned the merits and defects as best he could, and having precisely gauged the strength and weakness of both sides, the learned and prudent king, ever wishing victory for his sons, then began to compare the strength of the two parties. And at last, having become convinced that the Pandavas were endowed with strength and energy both human and divine, and that the Kurus were far weaker, Dhritarashtra said to Duryodhana: 'This anxiety, O Duryodhana, ever fills me.'

This passage (5.60.1-5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of envoys, fidelity to promises, and the kings' responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
