I shall give him eighteen thousand woolen blankets, soft to the touch, given to us by the mountain-folk. I shall also give him a thousand deerskins brought from China, and other such things worthy of Keshava. I shall also give him this tranquil gem of purest rays, shining day and night, for Keshava alone is worthy of it. This chariot of mine, drawn by mules, which travels a full circuit of fourteen yojanas in a day, I shall likewise give him. I shall set before him a daily provision eight times greater than what is needed for the animals and attendants making up his retinue.

The passage 5.86.11-15 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key themes: the Pandavas, Duryodhana. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the kings' responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
