वैशंपायन उवाच
धृतराष्ट्रवचः श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ समर्थ्य तौ ॥
दुर्योधनम् इदं वाक्यम् ऊचतुः शासनातिगम् ॥
यावत् कृष्णाव् असंनद्धौ यावत् तिष्ठति गाण्डिवम् ॥
यावद् धौम्यो न सेनाग्नौ जुहोतीह द्विषद्बलम् ॥
यावन् न प्रेक्षते क्रुद्धः सेनां तव युधिष्ठिरः ॥
ह्रीनिषेधो महेष्वासस् तावच् छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥
यावन् न दृष्यते पार्थः स्वेष्व् अनीकेष्व् अवस्थितः ॥
भीमसेनो महेष्वासस् तावच् छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥
यावन् न चरते मार्गान् पृतनाम् अभिहर्षयन् ॥
यावन् न शातयत्य् आजौ शिरांसि गजयोधिनाम् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
dhṛtarāṣṭravacaḥ śrutvā bhīṣmadroṇau samarthya tau ||
duryodhanam idaṃ vākyam ūcatuḥ śāsanātigam ||
yāvat kṛṣṇāv asaṃnaddhau yāvat tiṣṭhati gāṇḍivam ||
yāvad dhaumyo na senāgnau juhotīha dviṣadbalam ||
yāvan na prekṣate kruddhaḥ senāṃ tava yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
hrīniṣedho maheṣvāsas tāvac chāmyatu vaiśasam ||
yāvan na dṛṣyate pārthaḥ sveṣv anīkeṣv avasthitaḥ ||
bhīmaseno maheṣvāsas tāvac chāmyatu vaiśasam ||
yāvan na carate mārgān pṛtanām abhiharṣayan ||
yāvan na śātayaty ājau śirāṃsi gajayodhinām ||
Vaishampayana said: 'Having heard the word of Dhritarashtra and endorsed it, Bhishma and Drona spoke this word to Duryodhana, who was transgressing their counsel: "While the two Krishnas are not yet armed, while Gandiva still rests unstrung, while Dhaumya has not yet offered the strength of the foes into the fire of war, while the enraged Yudhishthira, the great archer, held back by shame, has not yet looked upon your army, let the slaughter cease. While the son of Pritha, Bhimasena, the great archer, is not yet seen standing in his own ranks, let the slaughter cease. While he does not yet move along the paths, gladdening the army, while he does not yet cut off the heads of the warriors mounted on elephants in battle…"'

Bhishma and Drona speak not in the abstract but with urgency: while the weapons of the Pandavas have not yet begun their harvest, peace is still possible. Their words mark the last point at which dharma can still halt the bloodshed: to receive Yudhishthira, embrace the brothers, and preserve the earth through brotherhood rather than slaughter.
