"'Without regard for anyone else, let a man so conduct himself throughout his life. This is the dharma of the kshatriyas, and such has always been my view. That share of the kingdom which was once granted to me by my father — as long as I live, it can never be taken from me again, O Keshava. As long as King Dhritarashtra lives, O Janardana, both we and they, having laid down our weapons, live under his rule, O Madhava. If this kingdom, belonging to another, was formerly given to me — though it ought not to have been given — whether out of ignorance or out of fear, when I was a child, O Janardana, then today the Pandavas can never obtain it again, O joy of the Vrishnis, while I still live, O mighty-armed Keshava.'"

Duryodhana answers not with an acknowledgment of dharma but with self-justification. He reduces the wrong to a formal game of dice, declares himself innocent, and cloaks his obstinacy in the language of kshatriya honor. Here the central rupture becomes visible: outward valor without humility and truth ceases to be dharma and becomes instead a determination to perish along with one's whole line.
