अस्मदीयैश् च शोचद्भिर् नदद्भिश् च परैर् वृतम् ॥
अपि त्वां नानुपश्येयं दीना दीनम् अवस्थितम् ॥
उष्य सौवीरकन्याभिः श्लाघस्वार्थैर् यथा पुरा ॥
मा च सैन्धवकन्यानाम् अवसन् नो वशं गमः ॥
युवा रूपेण संपन्नो विद्ययाभिजनेन च ॥
यस् त्वादृशो विकुर्वीत यशस्वी लोकविश्रुतः ॥
वोढव्ये धुर्य् अनडुवन् मन्ये मरणम् एव तत् ॥
यदि त्वाम् अनुपश्यामि परस्य प्रियवादिनम् ॥
पृष्ठतो ऽनुव्रजन्तं वा का शान्तिर् हृदयस्य मे ॥
नास्मिञ् जातु कुले जातो गच्छेद् यो ऽन्यस्य पृष्ठतः ॥
न त्वं परस्यानुधुरं तात जीवितुम् अर्हसि ॥
asmadīyaiś ca śocadbhir nadadbhiś ca parair vṛtam ||
api tvāṃ nānupaśyeyaṃ dīnā dīnam avasthitam ||
uṣya sauvīrakanyābhiḥ ślāghasvārthair yathā purā ||
mā ca saindhavakanyānām avasan no vaśaṃ gamaḥ ||
yuvā rūpeṇa saṃpanno vidyayābhijanena ca ||
yas tvādṛśo vikurvīta yaśasvī lokaviśrutaḥ ||
voḍhavye dhury anaḍuvan manye maraṇam eva tat ||
yadi tvām anupaśyāmi parasya priyavādinam ||
pṛṣṭhato 'nuvrajantaṃ vā kā śāntir hṛdayasya me ||
nāsmiñ jātu kule jāto gacched yo 'nyasya pṛṣṭhataḥ ||
na tvaṃ parasyānudhuraṃ tāta jīvitum arhasi ||
‘May I never see you wretched, standing in a wretched state, surrounded by our own people grieving and wailing, and by enemies. Live among the maidens of Sauvira, take pride in your riches as before; but do not, while living, fall under the sway of the maidens of Sindhu. A young man, endowed with beauty, learning, and noble birth, glorious and renowned throughout the world, one such as you — should he conduct himself basely, that, I think, would be like death for an ox forced to bear the yoke. If I see you speaking flattering words to another, or walking behind him, what peace could there be in my heart? In this family none was ever born who walked behind another. My son, you must not live under another’s yoke.’
