ईदृशं भवती कं चिद् उपायम् अनुपश्यति ॥
तन् मे परिणतप्रज्ञे सम्यक् प्रब्रूहि पृच्छते ॥
करिष्यामि हि तत् सर्वं यथावद् अनुशासनम् ॥
मातोवाच
पुत्रात्मा नावमन्तव्यः पूर्वाभिर् असमृद्धिभिः ॥
अभूत्वा हि भवन्त्य् अर्था भूत्वा नश्यन्ति चापरे ॥
अमर्षेणैव चाप्य् अर्था नारब्धव्याः सुबालिशैः ॥
सर्वेषां कर्मणां तात फले नित्यम् अनित्यता ॥
अनित्यम् इति जानन्तो न भवन्ति भवन्ति च ॥
अथ ये नैव कुर्वन्ति नैव जातु भवन्ति ते ॥
ऐकगुण्यम् अनीहायाम् अभावः कर्मणां फलम् ॥
अथ द्वैगुण्यम् ईहायां फलं भवति वा न वा ॥

abhūtvā hi bhavanty arthā bhūtvā naśyanti cāpare ||
amarṣeṇaiva cāpy arthā nārabdhavyāḥ subāliśaiḥ ||
sarveṣāṃ karmaṇāṃ tāta phale nityam anityatā ||
anityam iti jānanto na bhavanti bhavanti ca ||
atha ye naiva kurvanti naiva jātu bhavanti te ||
aikaguṇyam anīhāyām abhāvaḥ karmaṇāṃ phalam ||
atha dvaiguṇyam īhāyāṃ phalaṃ bhavati vā na vā ||
"If you, mature in wisdom, see some means, tell me clearly, now that I ask. I will carry out this whole instruction exactly as I should." The mother said: "A son should not belittle his own soul because of past misfortunes. Affairs that did not exist before come into being; and those that have come into being sometimes perish. But affairs should never be undertaken out of mere indignation, as the utterly foolish do. In the fruits of all actions, my son, there is always impermanence. Knowing that everything is impermanent, some act and succeed, while others do not act and never obtain anything at all. In inaction, the only fruit of action is its absence; in effort, the fruit is twofold — it may come, or it may not."
