'Before you, O mighty-armed one, is an example: how once, in the city of Virata, we were all defeated in battle by the wise Partha. In that fight he called upon a terrible weapon and, with the fire of the astras, burned the Danavas called Nivatakavachas, dreadful in their deeds. Karna and the others — and you yourself, armored and mounted on a chariot — were rescued during the expedition to the pastures: this example is enough. Be at peace, O best of the Bharatas, together with your brothers the Pandavas; protect this whole earth, which has fallen between the fangs of death. Your eldest brother is righteous, loving toward his kin, gentle of speech, and pure; go to that tiger among men, casting off your guilt here.'

Bhishma and Drona no longer speak as counselors seeking compromise at any cost, but as witnesses to inevitable consequences. Peace is still possible — but only through Duryodhana's humility and his acknowledgment of the debt owed to the Pandavas.
