पीड्यन्ते ते प्रजाः सर्वा व्याधिभिर् भृशदारुणैः ॥
अल्पावशिष्टा गाङ्गेय ताः परित्रातुम् अर्हसि ॥
व्याधीन् प्रणुद्य वीर त्वं प्रजा धर्मेण पालय ॥
त्वयि जीवति मा राष्ट्रं विनाशम् उपगच्छतु ॥
भीष्म उवाच
प्रजानां क्रोशतीनां वै नैवाक्षुभ्यत मे मनः ॥
प्रतिज्ञां रक्षमाणस्य सद्वृत्तं स्मरतस् तथा ॥
ततः पौरा महाराज माता काली च मे शुभा ॥
भृत्याः पुरोहिताचार्या ब्राह्मणाश् च बहुश्रुताः ॥
माम् ऊचुर् भृशसंतप्ता भव राजेति संततम् ॥
प्रतीपरक्षितं राष्ट्रं त्वां प्राप्य विनशिष्यति ॥
स त्वम् अस्मद्धितार्थं वै राजा भव महामते ॥
pīḍyante te prajāḥ sarvā vyādhibhir bhṛśadāruṇaiḥ ||
alpāvaśiṣṭā gāṅgeya tāḥ paritrātum arhasi ||
vyādhīn praṇudya vīra tvaṃ prajā dharmeṇa pālaya ||
tvayi jīvati mā rāṣṭraṃ vināśam upagacchatu ||
bhīṣma uvāca
prajānāṃ krośatīnāṃ vai naivākṣubhyata me manaḥ ||
pratijñāṃ rakṣamāṇasya sadvṛttaṃ smaratas tathā ||
tataḥ paurā mahārāja mātā kālī ca me śubhā ||
bhṛtyāḥ purohitācāryā brāhmaṇāś ca bahuśrutāḥ ||
mām ūcur bhṛśasaṃtaptā bhava rājeti saṃtatam ||
pratīparakṣitaṃ rāṣṭraṃ tvāṃ prāpya vinaśiṣyati ||
sa tvam asmaddhitārthaṃ vai rājā bhava mahāmate ||
"'All your subjects are suffering from extremely terrible diseases; only a few of them remain, O son of Ganga, and you should save them. O hero, having driven away these diseases, protect the people according to dharma; while you live, let not the kingdom go to ruin.' Bhishma said: 'Though the subjects cried out, my mind did not waver at all: I kept my vow and remembered the righteous course of action. Then the citizens, O great king, my good mother Kali, the servants, the priests, the preceptors, and the greatly learned brahmins, greatly distressed, continually said to me: "Become king. The kingdom that was protected by Pratipa will perish if, reaching you, it is left without protection. Therefore, for our good, become king, O wise one."'"

Krishna recounts to the Pandavas how Bhishma tried to restrain Duryodhana by the force of his own example. The account of Bhishma's own vow shows that the dharma of a family demands not proud possession but self-restraint for the sake of preserving the family and its rightful inheritance.
