अन्धः करणहीनेति न वै राजा पिता तव ॥
राजा तु पाण्डुर् अभवन् महात्मा लोकविश्रुतः ॥
स राजा तस्य ते पुत्राः पितुर् दायाद्यहारिणः ॥
मा तात कलहं कार्षी राज्यस्यार्धं प्रदीयताम् ॥
मयि जीवति राज्यं कः संप्रशासेत् पुमान् इह ॥
मावमंस्था वचो मह्यं शमम् इच्छामि वः सदा ॥
न विशेषो ऽस्ति मे पुत्र त्वयि तेषु च पार्थिव ॥
मतम् एतत् पितुस् तुभ्यं गान्धार्या विदुरस्य च ॥
श्रोतव्यं यदि वृद्धानां मातिशङ्कीर् वचो मम ॥
नाशयिष्यसि मा सर्वम् आत्मानं पृथिवीं तथा ॥

rājā tu pāṇḍur abhavan mahātmā lokaviśrutaḥ ||
sa rājā tasya te putrāḥ pitur dāyādyahāriṇaḥ ||
mā tāta kalahaṃ kārṣī rājyasyārdhaṃ pradīyatām ||
mayi jīvati rājyaṃ kaḥ saṃpraśāset pumān iha ||
māvamaṃsthā vaco mahyaṃ śamam icchāmi vaḥ sadā ||
na viśeṣo 'sti me putra tvayi teṣu ca pārthiva ||
matam etat pitus tubhyaṃ gāndhāryā vidurasya ca ||
śrotavyaṃ yadi vṛddhānāṃ mātiśaṅkīr vaco mama ||
nāśayiṣyasi mā sarvam ātmānaṃ pṛthivīṃ tathā ||
"'Your father was not king, since he was blind and lacked the capacity to rule; it was the magnanimous Pandu who became king, renowned in the world. He was king, and his sons are the rightful heirs of their father. Do not provoke a quarrel, my son; let half the kingdom be given to them. While I am alive, what man here could rule the kingdom against my will? Do not disregard my word: I always wish for peace among you. O ruler, there is no difference for me between you and them, my son. This is the opinion of your father, of Gandhari, and of Vidura. If the elders are to be heeded, do not doubt my word. Do not destroy everything — both yourself and the earth.'"

Krishna recounts to the Pandavas how Bhishma tried to restrain Duryodhana by the force of his own example. The account of Bhishma's own vow shows that the dharma of a family demands not proud possession but self-restraint for the sake of preserving the family and its rightful inheritance.
