वासुदेव उवाच
भीष्मेणोक्ते ततो द्रोणो दुर्योधनम् अभाषत ॥
मध्ये नृपाणां भद्रं ते वचनं वचनक्षमः ॥
प्रातीपः शंतनुस् तात कुलस्यार्थे यथोत्थितः ॥
तथा देवव्रतो भीष्मः कुलस्यार्थे स्थितो ऽभवत् ॥
ततः पाण्डुर् नरपतिः सत्यसंधो जितेन्द्रियः ॥
राजा कुरूणां धर्मात्मा सुव्रतः सुसमाहितः ॥
ज्येष्ठाय राज्यम् अददाद् धृतराष्ट्राय धीमते ॥
यवीयसस् तथा क्षत्तुः कुरुवंशविवर्धनः ॥
ततः सिंहासने राजन् स्थापयित्वैनम् अच्युतम् ॥
वनं जगाम कौरव्यो भार्याभ्यां सहितो ऽनघ ॥

bhīṣmeṇokte tato droṇo duryodhanam abhāṣata ||
madhye nṛpāṇāṃ bhadraṃ te vacanaṃ vacanakṣamaḥ ||
prātīpaḥ śaṃtanus tāta kulasyārthe yathotthitaḥ ||
tathā devavrato bhīṣmaḥ kulasyārthe sthito 'bhavat ||
tataḥ pāṇḍur narapatiḥ satyasaṃdho jitendriyaḥ ||
rājā kurūṇāṃ dharmātmā suvrataḥ susamāhitaḥ ||
jyeṣṭhāya rājyam adadād dhṛtarāṣṭrāya dhīmate ||
yavīyasas tathā kṣattuḥ kuruvaṃśavivardhanaḥ ||
tataḥ siṃhāsane rājan sthāpayitvainam acyutam ||
vanaṃ jagāma kauravyo bhāryābhyāṃ sahito 'nagha ||
Vasudeva said: After Bhishma had spoken, Drona, capable of speaking a worthy word, addressed Duryodhana in the midst of the kings: 'Blessings on you, my son. As Shantanu, son of Pratipa, rose up for the sake of the family, so too did Devavrata-Bhishma stand for the sake of the family. Then Pandu, lord of men, true to his word, master of his senses, righteous, keeping a good vow and composed, became king of the Kurus. He gave the kingdom to the wise Dhritarashtra as the elder, and also to the younger kshattar Vidura, who exalts the Kuru line. Then, O king, having established this steadfast one upon the throne, the Kaurava Pandu, sinless, went to the forest together with his two wives.'

In this chapter Drona, Vidura, and Gandhari, one after another, bring Duryodhana back to one and the same ground: the authority of the Kurus rests not on personal whim but on the dharma of the family, on lawful succession, and on faithfulness to one's elders. Their words show that denying the Pandavas their rightful share destroys not only the political order but the very fabric of the family.
