'The king and the kshattar, both of great dignity, while Bhishma stands beside them, ought to be subject to him. But this noble-minded son of Ganga, best of men, out of his knowledge of dharma, does not desire the kingdom. This inviolable kingdom belonged to Pandu; today his sons have the right to it, and no others. This whole kingdom of the Pandavas is their grandfather's inheritance, passing on to sons and grandsons. Whatever the noble-minded Devavrata, foremost of the Kurus, true to his word and wise, may say -- all of that we must accept, without violating dharma and while keeping to our own duty. And with the leave of the great-vowed one, let the king say the same as Vidura; this should be done together with our friends, setting dharma foremost for a long time to come. Let Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, rule this Kuru kingdom, come to him by right, urged on by King Dhritarashtra and upheld by the son of Shantanu.'

In this chapter Drona, Vidura, and Gandhari, one after another, bring Duryodhana back to one and the same ground: the authority of the Kurus rests not on personal whim but on the dharma of the family, on lawful succession, and on faithfulness to one's elders. Their words show that denying the Pandavas their rightful share destroys not only the political order but the very fabric of the family.
