'The assembled royal kshatriya host has, without doubt, ripened to its season; a very great carnage is coming, one muddied with flesh and blood. Again and again I told Vasudeva in private: "O Madhusudana, conduct yourself evenly toward your kinsmen. As the Pandavas are ours, so is King Duryodhana; he too should be shown proper reverence." But Madhusudana did not carry out these words of mine for your sake: he has taken his stand with his whole being, looking to Dhananjaya. The victory of the Pandavas is certain -- this is my firm conviction, O Bharata, for such is the resolute devotion of Vasudeva.'

The chapter contrasts two forms of faithfulness: the Pandavas organize their army under Krishna's guidance, while Balarama, equally bound to both Bhima and Duryodhana, chooses not to take part in the fratricidal war. His departure does not diminish the rightness of the Pandavas' cause, but it underscores the gravity of the moment: even one who accepts Keshava's will is not always able to watch the destruction of his own kin.
