शार्ङ्गं तु वैष्णवं प्राहुर् दिव्यं तेजोमयं धनुः ॥
धारयाम् आस यत् कृष्णः परसेनाभयावहम् ॥
गाण्डीवं पावकाल् लेभे खाण्डवे पाकशासनिः ॥
द्रुमाद् रुक्मी महातेजा विजयं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥
संछिद्य मौरवान् पाशान् निहत्य मुरम् ओजसा ॥
निर्जित्य नरकं भौमम् आहृत्य मणिकुण्डले ॥
षोडश स्त्रीसहस्राणि रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥
प्रतिपेदे हृषीकेशः शार्ङ्गं च धनुर् उत्तमम् ॥
रुक्मी तु विजयं लब्ध्वा धनुर् मेघसमस्वनम् ॥
विभीषयन्न् इव जगत् पाण्डवान् अभ्यवर्तत ॥

nirjitya narakaṃ bhaumam āhṛtya maṇikuṇḍale ||
ṣoḍaśa strīsahasrāṇi ratnāni vividhāni ca ||
pratipede hṛṣīkeśaḥ śārṅgaṃ ca dhanur uttamam ||
rukmī tu vijayaṃ labdhvā dhanur meghasamasvanam ||
vibhīṣayann iva jagat pāṇḍavān abhyavartata ||
They call Sharnga the divine, splendor-filled bow of Vishnu; Krishna bore it, and it struck terror into enemy armies. The conqueror of Paka obtained Gandiva from Agni at Khandava, while the greatly splendorous Rukmi obtained Vijaya from Druma. Hrishikesha, having severed Mura's bonds, having slain Mura by his might, having conquered Bhauma Naraka, and having taken jeweled earrings, sixteen thousand women, and various treasures, also received the supreme bow Sharnga. Rukmi, having obtained the bow Vijaya, which resounded like a thundercloud, advanced toward the Pandavas as if to terrify the world.

Rukmi arrives as an ally, but his speech reveals not service to dharma but self-assurance and a wish to display his own strength. Arjuna's answer is not empty pride: he reminds him that his support has already been proven in battle, and it consists not in some chance helper but in Krishna, in divine weapons, in his teachers, and in his own responsibility as a kshatriya. That is why both the Pandavas and Duryodhana are left without Rukmi: the war is purified of ostentatious support that carries no inner loyalty.
