संजय उवाच
उलूकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
सेनां निर्यापयाम् आस धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाम् ॥
पदातिनीं नागवतीं रथिनीम् अश्ववृन्दिनीम् ॥
चतुर्विधबलां भीमाम् अकम्प्यां पृथिवीम् इव ॥
भीमसेनादिभिर् गुप्तां सार्जुनैश् च महारथैः ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नवशां दुर्गां सागरस्तिमितोपमाम् ॥
तस्यास् त्व् अग्रे महेष्वासः पाञ्चाल्यो युद्धदुर्मदः ॥
द्रोणप्रेप्सुर् अनीकानि धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रकर्षति ॥
यथाबलं यथोत्साहं रथिनः समुपादिशत् ॥
अर्जुनं सूतपुत्राय भीमं दुर्योधनाय च ॥

senāṃ niryāpayām āsa dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamām ||
padātinīṃ nāgavatīṃ rathinīm aśvavṛndinīm ||
caturvidhabalāṃ bhīmām akampyāṃ pṛthivīm iva ||
bhīmasenādibhir guptāṃ sārjunaiś ca mahārathaiḥ ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnavaśāṃ durgāṃ sāgarastimitopamām ||
tasyās tv agre maheṣvāsaḥ pāñcālyo yuddhadurmadaḥ ||
droṇaprepsur anīkāni dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ prakarṣati ||
yathābalaṃ yathotsāhaṃ rathinaḥ samupādiśat ||
arjunaṃ sūtaputrāya bhīmaṃ duryodhanāya ca ||
Sanjaya said: Having heard the words of Uluka, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, ordered the army led out, with Dhrishtadyumna at its head. It contained foot soldiers, elephants, chariots, and cavalry; this formidable fourfold army was as unshakable as the earth itself. It was guarded by Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the other great chariot-warriors; it obeyed Dhrishtadyumna, was hard to approach, and resembled a motionless ocean. At the head of this army, the great archer Dhrishtadyumna, the Panchala prince, indomitable in battle and eager to reach Drona, led the battle formations forward. According to each warrior's strength and zeal, he assigned the chariot-fighters their tasks: Arjuna he set against the son of the suta, and Bhima against Duryodhana.

War is no longer discussed as a possibility: it takes the form of order, deployment, and personal responsibility. Dhrishtadyumna acts not haphazardly but in accordance with each warrior's strength, assigning each his opponent. It is especially significant that he takes Drona upon himself: born for the death of the teacher, he meets his destiny not as a personal whim but as part of the Pandavas' shared duty.
