युगान्ताग्निसमः क्रोधे सिंहग्रीवो महामतिः ॥
एष भारत युद्धस्य पृष्ठं संशमयिष्यति ॥
पिता त्व् अस्य महातेजा वृद्धो ऽपि युवभिर् वरः ॥
रणे कर्म महत् कर्ता तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ॥
अस्त्रवेगानिलोद्धूतः सेनाकक्षेन्धनोत्थितः ॥
पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्यानि प्रधक्ष्यति जये धृतः ॥
रथयूथपयूथानां यूथपः स नरर्षभः ॥
भारद्वाजात्मजः कर्ता कर्म तीव्रं हिताय वः ॥
सर्वमूर्धाभिषिक्तानाम् आचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः ॥
गच्छेद् अन्तं सृञ्जयानां प्रियस् त्व् अस्य धनंजयः ॥
yugāntāgnisamaḥ krodhe siṃhagrīvo mahāmatiḥ ||
eṣa bhārata yuddhasya pṛṣṭhaṃ saṃśamayiṣyati ||
pitā tv asya mahātejā vṛddho 'pi yuvabhir varaḥ ||
raṇe karma mahat kartā tatra me nāsti saṃśayaḥ ||
astravegāniloddhūtaḥ senākakṣendhanotthitaḥ ||
pāṇḍuputrasya sainyāni pradhakṣyati jaye dhṛtaḥ ||
rathayūthapayūthānāṃ yūthapaḥ sa nararṣabhaḥ ||
bhāradvājātmajaḥ kartā karma tīvraṃ hitāya vaḥ ||
sarvamūrdhābhiṣiktānām ācāryaḥ sthaviro guruḥ ||
gacched antaṃ sṛñjayānāṃ priyas tv asya dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
In anger he is like the fire at the end of the yuga, lion-necked and of great intellect; he, O Bharata, will subdue the rear of the battle. His father, of great splendor, though old, surpasses the young; in battle he will perform a great deed, of this I have no doubt. Fanned by the wind of swift weapons, blazing up with the army as his fuel, firmly resolved on victory, he will burn up the troops of the son of Pandu. This son of Bharadvaja, leader of the troops of chariot-warrior bands, O best of men, will perform for your benefit a harsh deed. Teacher of all the crowned kings, the old guru, he could bring the Srinjayas to their end, but Dhananjaya is dear to him.

Bhishma goes on to weigh not only the warriors' strength but the limits of that strength. Ashvatthaman is nearly boundless in weaponry, yet his attachment to life makes any reckoning of him uncertain; Drona is capable of destroying entire armies, yet his love for Arjuna restrains his hand. In this way the roster of ratha warriors becomes not a dry military ledger but a map of inner knots: valor, attachment, old pacts, past enmity, and personal debts all enter the battle together with the weapons.
