भीष्म उवाच
रोचमानो महाराज पाण्डवानां महारथः ॥
योत्स्यते ऽमरवत् संख्ये परसैन्येषु भारत ॥
पुरुजित् कुन्तिभोजश् च महेष्वासो महाबलः ॥
मातुलो भीमसेनस्य स च मे ऽतिरथो मतः ॥
एष वीरो महेष्वासः कृती च निपुणश् च ह ॥
चित्रयोधी च शक्तश् च मतो मे रथपुंगवः ॥
स योत्स्यति हि विक्रम्य मघवान् इव दानवैः ॥
योधाश् चास्य परिख्याताः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥
भागिनेयकृते वीरः स करिष्यति संगरे ॥
सुमहत् कर्म पाण्डूनां स्थितः प्रियहिते नृपः ॥

rocamāno mahārāja pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathaḥ ||
yotsyate 'maravat saṃkhye parasainyeṣu bhārata ||
purujit kuntibhojaś ca maheṣvāso mahābalaḥ ||
mātulo bhīmasenasya sa ca me 'tiratho mataḥ ||
eṣa vīro maheṣvāsaḥ kṛtī ca nipuṇaś ca ha ||
citrayodhī ca śaktaś ca mato me rathapuṃgavaḥ ||
sa yotsyati hi vikramya maghavān iva dānavaiḥ ||
yodhāś cāsya parikhyātāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ ||
bhāgineyakṛte vīraḥ sa kariṣyati saṃgare ||
sumahat karma pāṇḍūnāṃ sthitaḥ priyahite nṛpaḥ ||
Bhishma said: Rochamana, O great king, the great charioteer of the Pandavas, will fight among the enemy troops as though he were an immortal in battle, O Bharata. Purujit Kuntibhoja, the great archer of mighty strength, the maternal uncle of Bhimasena, is in my judgment an atiratha. This hero, a great archer, skilled, adept, a master of varied combat and able, is in my judgment a bull among charioteers. He will fight, exerting his valor, like Maghavan against the danavas; his warriors too are renowned, all of them expert in war. For the sake of his nephew this heroic king will accomplish a very great deed in battle for the Pandavas, standing firm in love and in their good.

Here Bhishma completes his assessment of the Pandava army while at the same time laying bare his own limits. He is ready to meet Arjuna and Krishna, ready to hold back kings and allies, yet he refuses to fight Shikhandin because of his own vow and Shikhandin's former birth as a woman. This limit is not weakness but fidelity to his word: even on the threshold of the great war, Bhishma remains bound by the dharma of his own vow.
