Bhishma said: As she left the city, she pondered, O Bharata: 'On this earth there is no young woman in a more grievous plight than I. I am bereft of kin and rejected by Shalva. Nor can I return again to Hastinapura, for Bhishma released me on the understanding that I was going to Shalva. Whom then should I blame -- myself, the unassailable Bhishma, or my foolish father who arranged my svayamvara? This is my own fault: when the terrible battle broke out, I did not leap down from Bhishma's chariot for Shalva's sake. Here is the fruit of that deed: I have fallen into misfortune like a madwoman. Shame on Bhishma, and shame on my weak, dull-hearted father, because of whom I was put up like a woman for sale, with valor for a ransom.'

After Shalva's rejection, Amba turns her pain into resolve for the first time. She still wavers over whom to blame -- herself, her father, Shalva, fate, or Bhishma -- but gradually comes to see Bhishma as the central knot of her misfortune. Her turn to austerity is significant: lacking any social support, she seeks strength not in the protection of kin but in tapas. Thus personal humiliation becomes a long path of retribution that will later return on the field of Kurukshetra.
