'Shame on me, shame on King Shalva, and shame on the Creator too, by whose ill decree I have fallen into the greatest misfortune. In any case, a person receives his own allotted portion of fate; but the beginning of this misfortune of mine was Bhishma, son of Shantanu. Now I see that retribution must be exacted against Bhishma, whether by austerity or by battle. He, in my judgment, is the cause of my suffering. But what lord of the earth would dare to conquer Bhishma in battle?' Having thus firmly resolved, she left the city and went to the hermitage of the noble-minded ascetics of holy conduct. She then spent the night there, surrounded by ascetics. O Bharata, the bright-smiling one told them everything that had happened to her, in full and complete detail -- the abduction, the releasing, and the rejection by Shalva.

After Shalva's rejection, Amba turns her pain into resolve for the first time. She still wavers over whom to blame -- herself, her father, Shalva, fate, or Bhishma -- but gradually comes to see Bhishma as the central knot of her misfortune. Her turn to austerity is significant: lacking any social support, she seeks strength not in the protection of kin but in tapas. Thus personal humiliation becomes a long path of retribution that will later return on the field of Kurukshetra.
