नाहं लोभान् न कार्पण्यान् न भयान् नार्थकारणात् ॥
त्यजेयं शाश्वतं धर्मम् इति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥
ततस् ते मुनयः सर्वे नारदप्रमुखा नृप ॥
भागीरथी च मे माता रणमध्यं प्रपेदिरे ॥
तथैवात्तशरो धन्वी तथैव दृढनिश्चयः ॥
स्थितो ऽहम् आहवे योद्धुं ततस् ते रामम् अब्रुवन् ॥
समेत्य सहिता भूयः समरे भृगुनन्दनम् ॥
नावनीतं हि हृदयं विप्राणां शाम्य भार्गव ॥
राम राम निवर्तस्व युद्धाद् अस्माद् द्विजोत्तम ॥
अवध्यो हि त्वया भीष्मस् त्वं च भीष्मस्य भार्गव ॥
एवं ब्रुवन्तस् ते सर्वे प्रतिरुध्य रणाजिरम् ॥
न्यासयां चक्रिरे शस्त्रं पितरो भृगुनन्दनम् ॥

tatas te munayaḥ sarve nāradapramukhā nṛpa ||

sthito 'ham āhave yoddhuṃ tatas te rāmam abruvan ||
sametya sahitā bhūyaḥ samare bhṛgunandanam ||
nāvanītaṃ hi hṛdayaṃ viprāṇāṃ śāmya bhārgava ||
rāma rāma nivartasva yuddhād asmād dvijottama ||
avadhyo hi tvayā bhīṣmas tvaṃ ca bhīṣmasya bhārgava ||
evaṃ bruvantas te sarve pratirudhya raṇājiram ||
nyāsayāṃ cakrire śastraṃ pitaro bhṛgunandanam ||
'Not out of greed, not out of faint-heartedness, not out of fear, and not for the sake of gain will I abandon the eternal dharma — such is my firm resolve.' Then all the sages headed by Narada, O king, and my mother Bhagirathi entered the midst of the battle. And I, still holding arrow and bow, stood in the fight with the same firm resolve, desiring to do battle. Then they gathered together once more and addressed Rama, the descendant of Bhrigu, in the combat: 'The heart of the brahmanas is not soft as butter, yet be at peace, O Bhargava. Rama, Rama, withdraw from this battle, best of the twice-born. For Bhishma cannot be slain by you, nor can you be slain by Bhishma, O Bhargava.' Speaking thus, all of them barred the field of battle, and the ancestors made the descendant of Bhrigu lay down his weapon.

Here the duel finally comes to a stop — not through defeat, but through the intervention of a higher order. Narada, the gods, the ancestors, the sages, and Ganga restrain them both: Bhishma from using Prasvapa against his teacher, and Rama from continuing to fight a kshatriya whom he neither should nor can kill. The chapter shows a rare form of victory: both sides keep their vow, yet accept the limit set by dharma. It is especially significant that Bhishma bows to Rama once the battle stops. He does not turn strength into pride; reverence for the guru remains higher than a warrior's self-regard.
