ततो दधार तं गर्भं देवी राजीवलोचना ॥
तां स राजा प्रियां भार्यां द्रुपदः कुरुनन्दन ॥
पुत्रस्नेहान् महाबाहुः सुखं पर्यचरत् तदा ॥
अपुत्रस्य ततो राज्ञो द्रुपदस्य महीपतेः ॥
कन्यां प्रवररूपां तां प्राजायत नराधिप ॥
अपुत्रस्य तु राज्ञः सा द्रुपदस्य यशस्विनी ॥
ख्यापयाम् आस राजेन्द्र पुत्रो जातो ममेति वै ॥
ततः स राजा द्रुपदः प्रच्छन्नाया नराधिप ॥
पुत्रवत् पुत्रकार्याणि सर्वाणि समकारयत् ॥
रक्षणं चैव मन्त्रस्य महिषी द्रुपदस्य सा ॥
चकार सर्वयत्नेन ब्रुवाणा पुत्र इत्य् उत ॥
न हि तां वेद नगरे कश् चिद् अन्यत्र पार्षतात् ॥

tāṃ sa rājā priyāṃ bhāryāṃ drupadaḥ kurunandana ||
putrasnehān mahābāhuḥ sukhaṃ paryacarat tadā ||
aputrasya tato rājño drupadasya mahīpateḥ ||
kanyāṃ pravararūpāṃ tāṃ prājāyata narādhipa ||
aputrasya tu rājñaḥ sā drupadasya yaśasvinī ||
khyāpayām āsa rājendra putro jāto mameti vai ||
tataḥ sa rājā drupadaḥ pracchannāyā narādhipa ||
putravat putrakāryāṇi sarvāṇi samakārayat ||
rakṣaṇaṃ caiva mantrasya mahiṣī drupadasya sā ||
cakāra sarvayatnena bruvāṇā putra ity uta ||
na hi tāṃ veda nagare kaś cid anyatra pārṣatāt ||
Then the lotus-eyed queen bore that child in her womb. Drupada, the mighty-armed, out of love for the son he awaited, tenderly cared for his beloved wife, O descendant of Kuru. Then to the childless King Drupada, lord of the earth, a daughter of surpassing beauty was born, O king. But the renowned wife of the childless King Drupada proclaimed: 'A son has been born to me.' Then King Drupada, while the child was kept concealed, had all the rites due a son performed as for a son. And the queen of Drupada, with all diligence, kept this secret, affirming: 'This is a son.' No one in the city knew her true nature, save the son of Prishata himself.

This chapter shows how Amba's vow begins to enter history through the house of Drupada. Shiva does not overturn the world's order by an instant miracle, but grants a destiny that unfolds gradually: the child is born a daughter, yet destined to become a man and the instrument of Bhishma's death. Drupada and his wife act out of faith in the god's word, and so they conceal the child's sex and perform the rites due a son. For Bhishma this is not merely a family secret of the Panchalas: he sees in it the continuation of Amba's austerity and the working of a destiny that no human means can turn aside.
