जघान युधि योधानाम् अर्बुदं दशभिर् दिनैः ॥
स शेते निष्टनन् भूमौ वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः ॥
तव दुर्मन्त्रिते राजन् यथा नार्हः स भारत ॥

The final verse names the cause directly: not any lack of valor in Bhishma, but Dhritarashtra's ill counsel that brought about this unworthy end. Sanjaya offers no comforting lie; he speaks the truth, because only truth can halt a further fall.
