"When Duryodhana saw the son of Shantanu fallen to the ground like the sun cast down, what did he then do, Sanjaya? Pondering with my own mind, I can see no strength remaining, neither among ours nor among the enemy, in the opposing ranks of kings. Harsh indeed is this duty of kshatriyas, declared by the sages, if the Pandavas desire the kingdom by slaying the son of Shantanu. Or do we ourselves desire the kingdom, having destroyed our grandsire? If the Parthas stand firm in the duty of kshatriyas, they commit no wrong, my children; thus should the noble act in grievous misfortune, Sanjaya — to exert oneself to the utmost of one's strength, and that was firmly established in Bhishma. How did the sons of Pandu cast down the son of Shantanu, noble and unconquered, who was destroying the ranks of the enemy? How were the armies arrayed, how was the battle of the great souls fought, and how was Bhishma, my father, slain by the foe, Sanjaya? What did Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni the son of Subala, and the gambler Duhshasana say when Bhishma was slain? The battlefield was a dreadful gaming-hall, strewn with the bodies of men, elephants, and horses, its bones made of arrows, spears, maces, swords, and lances. What foolish gamblers entered this impregnable hall of war? Who played the terrible game where life itself was the stake? Who won, who was defeated and cast down, besides Bhishma, the son of Shantanu? Tell me all of this, Sanjaya."

The metaphor of the dice game brings Dhritarashtra back to the first sin of the conflict: the game of chance has now revealed itself as a game staked on life. What began in the assembly hall as deceit has become, on the battlefield, a reckoning in blood.
