O Janardana, what joy would we have from killing the sons of Dhritarashtra? Having slain these aggressors, we would only take sin upon ourselves. Therefore it is not fitting for us to kill the sons of Dhritarashtra together with their kinsmen; O Madhava, how could we be happy, having killed our own? Even though they, their minds overcome by greed, see no fault in the destruction of the family and no sin in betraying friends, how could we, who clearly see this evil, fail to know that we must turn away from such sin, O Janardana? With the destruction of the family, the eternal family dharmas perish; when dharma is destroyed, adharma overtakes the whole family. From the prevailing of adharma, O Krishna, the women of the family become corrupted; when women fall, O Varshneya, mixture of varnas is born. Such mixture leads to hell both for the destroyers of the family and for the family itself; their ancestors fall, deprived of the offerings of rice and water. By these faults of the destroyers of the family, which bring about the mixture of varnas, the dharmas of birth and the eternal dharmas of the family are destroyed. O Janardana, we have heard that men whose family dharmas are destroyed dwell in hell forever.

Arjuna reasons as a guardian of social and ritual order: he fears not his own death, but the destruction of the family, of dharma, of the memory of ancestors, and of society's future. His argument is strong on the level of ordinary morality, but it does not yet distinguish the higher will of the Lord from the duty given specifically to him.
