संजय उवाच
गतपूर्वाह्णभूयिष्ठे तस्मिन्न् अहनि दारुणे ॥
वर्तमाने महारौद्रे महावीरवरक्षये ॥
दुर्मुखः कृतवर्मा च कृपः शल्यो विविंशतिः ॥
भीष्मं जुगुपुर् आसाद्य तव पुत्रेण चोदिताः ॥
एतैर् अतिरथैर् गुप्तः पञ्चभिर् भरतर्षभ ॥
पाण्डवानाम् अनीकानि विजगाहे महारथः ॥
चेदिकाशिकरूषेषु पाञ्चालेषु च भारत ॥
भीष्मस्य बहुधा तालश् चरन् केतुर् अदृश्यत ॥
शिरांसि च तदा भीष्मो बाहूंश् चापि सहायुधान् ॥
निचकर्त महावेगैर् भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
नृत्यतो रथमार्गेषु भीष्मस्य भरतर्षभ ॥
के चिद् आर्तस्वरं चक्रुर् नागा मर्मणि ताडिताः ॥

gatapūrvāhṇabhūyiṣṭhe tasminn ahani dāruṇe ||
vartamāne mahāraudre mahāvīravarakṣaye ||
durmukhaḥ kṛtavarmā ca kṛpaḥ śalyo viviṃśatiḥ ||
bhīṣmaṃ jugupur āsādya tava putreṇa coditāḥ ||
etair atirathair guptaḥ pañcabhir bharatarṣabha ||
pāṇḍavānām anīkāni vijagāhe mahārathaḥ ||
cedikāśikarūṣeṣu pāñcāleṣu ca bhārata ||
bhīṣmasya bahudhā tālaś caran ketur adṛśyata ||
śirāṃsi ca tadā bhīṣmo bāhūṃś cāpi sahāyudhān ||
nicakarta mahāvegair bhallaiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
nṛtyato rathamārgeṣu bhīṣmasya bharatarṣabha ||
ke cid ārtasvaraṃ cakrur nāgā marmaṇi tāḍitāḥ ||
Sanjaya said: "When most of the morning of that terrible day had already passed, and the dreadful slaughter of the finest great heroes continued, Durmukha, Kritavarman, Kripa, Shalya, and Vivimshati, urged on by your son, came forward and set themselves to guard Bhishma. Protected by these five atirathas, the great charioteer entered the battle-ranks of the Pandavas, O best of the Bharatas. Among the Chedis, Kashis, Karushas, and Panchalas, O Bharata, Bhishma's moving palm-tree banner was seen everywhere. Then Bhishma, with swift, well-jointed bhalla-arrows, lopped off heads and arms together with their weapons. While Bhishma seemed to dance along the paths of the chariots, some of the elephants, struck in their vital parts, let out cries of anguish, O best of the Bharatas."

The scene reveals not only Bhishma's power but the tragedy of his position: the great guardian of the dynasty becomes the center of terrible destruction. When valor serves a duty severed from truth, it still brings suffering.
