Uttara, son of Virata, on his elephant with trunk raised, charged upon the king, the lord of the Madras. As that king of elephants bore down with speed, the charioteer Shalya checked its unmatched fury in the battle. Then the enraged lord of elephants, huge and magnificently paced, planted his foot upon the yoked pair and killed Shalya's four horses. Standing on his chariot with its horses slain, the lord of the Madras hurled an iron javelin, like a serpent, which became the death of Uttara. His armor pierced, sinking into a vast darkness, Uttara let fall his goad and lance and toppled from the elephant's back. Shalya seized his sword, leapt down from his splendid chariot, boldly advanced upon the king of elephants, and cut off its great trunk. Wounded in its vital parts by masses of arrows, its trunk severed, the elephant let out a terrible cry of anguish, fell, and died. Having done this, the king of the Madras, the great charioteer, quickly mounted the shining chariot of Kritavarman."

Uttara's death shows how fragile royal youth is before seasoned military strength. The verse does not romanticize the killing: alongside the warrior falls the majestic elephant too, and the field is filled once more with the suffering of living creatures.
