भीष्म उवाच
ततः स भगवान् देवो लोकानां परमेश्वरः ॥
ब्रह्माणं प्रत्युवाचेदं स्निग्धगम्भीरया गिरा ॥
विदितं तात योगान् मे सर्वम् एतत् तवेप्सितम् ॥
तथा तद् भवितेत्य् उक्त्वा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥
ततो देवर्षिगन्धर्वा विस्मयं परमं गताः ॥
कौतूहलपराः सर्वे पितामहम् अथाब्रुवन् ॥
को न्व् अयं यो भगवता प्रणम्य विनयाद् विभो ॥
वाग्भिः स्तुतो वरिष्ठाभिः श्रोतुम् इच्छाम तं वयम् ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तु भगवान् प्रत्युवाच पितामहः ॥
देवब्रह्मर्षिगन्धर्वान् सर्वान् मधुरया गिरा ॥
यत् तत्परं भविष्यं च भवितव्यं च यत् परम् ॥
भूतात्मा यः प्रभुश् चैव ब्रह्म यच् च परं पदम् ॥
तेनास्मि कृतसंवादः प्रसन्नेन सुरर्षभाः ॥
जगतो ऽनुग्रहार्थाय याचितो मे जगत्पतिः ॥
मानुषं लोकम् आतिष्ठ वासुदेव इति श्रुतः ॥
असुराणां वधार्थाय संभवस्व महीतले ॥

tataḥ sa bhagavān devo lokānāṃ parameśvaraḥ ||
brahmāṇaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ snigdhagambhīrayā girā ||
viditaṃ tāta yogān me sarvam etat tavepsitam ||
tathā tad bhavitety uktvā tatraivāntaradhīyata ||
tato devarṣigandharvā vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ ||
kautūhalaparāḥ sarve pitāmaham athābruvan ||
ko nv ayaṃ yo bhagavatā praṇamya vinayād vibho ||
vāgbhiḥ stuto variṣṭhābhiḥ śrotum icchāma taṃ vayam ||
evam uktas tu bhagavān pratyuvāca pitāmahaḥ ||
devabrahmarṣigandharvān sarvān madhurayā girā ||
yat tatparaṃ bhaviṣyaṃ ca bhavitavyaṃ ca yat param ||
bhūtātmā yaḥ prabhuś caiva brahma yac ca paraṃ padam ||
tenāsmi kṛtasaṃvādaḥ prasannena surarṣabhāḥ ||
jagato 'nugrahārthāya yācito me jagatpatiḥ ||
mānuṣaṃ lokam ātiṣṭha vāsudeva iti śrutaḥ ||
asurāṇāṃ vadhārthāya saṃbhavasva mahītale ||
Bhishma said: "Then that blessed God, the supreme lord of the worlds, answered Brahma in a soft and deep voice: 'By the power of My yoga I know all that you desire, son. So it shall be.' Having said this, He vanished on the spot. Then the divine seers and gandharvas, seized with utter astonishment and curiosity, said to the Forefather: 'Who indeed is this, O Lord, before whom you bowed in humility and whom you praised with the finest words? We wish to hear of Him.' Thus addressed, the blessed Forefather answered all the gods, brahmarshis, and gandharvas in a sweet voice: 'That supreme which will be, that supreme which must be, the Self of all beings and the Lord, that Brahman and the supreme abode — with Him, gracious as He is, I have conversed, O best of the gods. For the sake of grace toward the world I entreated the Lord of the world: "Take up the human world, be known as Vasudeva, and be born upon the earth to destroy the asuras."'"

Here Krishna's descent is shown as the Supreme Lord's conscious response to Brahma's request. He is not bound by the necessity of birth: He takes on the human world out of grace toward the world.
