Seeing the mandala, this extremely fearsome array, king Yudhishthira himself arrayed his army in the form of the vajra. When the armies were thus arrayed and each man stood at his post, the chariot-warriors and horsemen let out a lion's roar. Then the heroes, longing for battle, advanced with their forces against one another, seeking to break the array and strike their blows. Bharadvaja advanced against the king of the Matsyas, Drauni against Shikhandin, and king Duryodhana himself attacked Parshata. Nakula and Sahadeva, o king, advanced against the lord of the Madras; the Avantyas Vinda and Anuvinda rushed at Iravant. All the kings in battle fought against Dhananjaya; Bhimasena, intent in the fight, held back Hardikya. Arjuna's son, o king, battled your sons — Chitrasena, Vikarna, and Durmarshana, o lord. Haidimba, the best of the rakshasas, charged with speed at the great archer, the king of Pragjyotisha, like a maddened elephant against a maddened elephant. Then the enraged rakshasa Alambusa, with his army, attacked the unconquerable Satyaki in battle. Bhurishrava fought diligently with Dhrishtaketu, and Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, with king Shrutayush. Chekitana battled precisely with Kripa, while the rest rushed forth intently against the maharatha Bhima. Then thousands of kings, bearing shakti spears, tomaras, narachas, maces, and parighas in their hands, surrounded Dhananjaya.

The chapter moves from the majestic array to a web of personal encounters. Each warrior meets his own opponent, and behind this order lies not a random crowd but karmic precision: each one goes exactly where he must meet his duty and his fear.
