Then Bhimasena, seeing Yudhishthira overcome by fear, cast aside his bow and arrows, took up his mace, and rushed on foot into battle against Jayadratha. As Bhima, with great speed, bore down upon him with his mace, Jayadratha pierced him from every side with five hundred terrible sharp arrows, like the rods of Yama. But the swift Vrikodara, seized by rage, heedless of those arrows, slew in battle all the Arattan horses of the king of the Sindhus. Then your son, of incomparable might, like the king of the gods, hastened up on his chariot with weapon raised to kill Bhimasena. Bhima, suddenly roaring, advanced to meet him with his mace, menacing him. When the Kurus, on every side, saw that mace raised aloft like the rod of Yama, they all abandoned your fierce son, wishing to escape its fall, and withdrew amid that tumultuous, terrible, and bewildering crush. But Chitrasena, his mind unclouded, saw the great mace hurtling toward him, abandoned his chariot, seized his sword and bright shield on foot, leapt down like a lion from a mountain peak, and moved off to another spot of ground. The mace, however, reaching his splendid chariot, destroyed it along with its horses and charioteer, and sank into the earth, blazing like a great meteor falling from the sky to the ground. Having seen this great wonder, O Bharata, your warriors rejoiced greatly, all cried out together from every side, and together with their armies honored your son.
