The earth gleamed, O Bharata, with the severed arms of swift warriors anointed with sandal paste, bearing palm-guards and bracelets, resembling elephants' trunks, and with their thighs; with the heads of bull-eyed heroes, fallen, bearing fastened diadems and earrings. The ground shone very brightly with armor smeared with blood and scattered golden ones, like fires with a dying flame. Scattered everywhere lay quivers, fallen bows, and gold-feathered arrows; many broken chariots hung with nets of bells like garlands; slain horses scattered about, with lolling, bloody tongues; chariot rear-parts, banners, quivers, flags, and the great, pale conch-shells of heroes. The earth gleamed with fallen elephants, their trunks hanging, adorned with ornaments of various kinds, like a bedecked woman. That battlefield appeared like mountains under the wind: there other elephants, sorely wounded by javelins, again and again emitted sound through their trunks and sprayed forth mist. It was covered with multicolored elephant-cloths and coverings, with beautiful fallen goads with handles of vaidurya gems, with the bells of elephant-kings fallen on every side, with torn, colorful saddle-cloths and woolen fabrics, with colorful breast-ornaments, golden girths, gear hacked apart, and tomaras with their shafts. There were horses' breastplates reddened with dust and covered in gold; the severed arms of riders, still wearing bracelets, lying fallen; clean, sharp javelins, bright rishtis, turbans hacked apart and scattered here and there; colorful crescent-headed arrows adorned with gold; crumpled coverings of horses and mules; precious royal diadems, cast-off parasols, and yak-tail fans. The faces of heroes, radiant as the lotus and the moon, with beautiful earrings, carefully groomed beards, richly adorned, together with gold-gleaming earrings scattered about, great king, made the earth seem like the sky, speckled with planets and stars. Thus these two great armies, yours and theirs, having met each other in battle, were crushed there, O Bharata. When they were exhausted, broken, and battered, a terrible night fell, and we no longer saw the fighting. Then the Kurus and Pandavas withdrew their armies at the dreadful, fearsome onset of night, in that extremely grim hour. Having made the withdrawal, the Kurus and Pandavas together encamped in due time, having returned to their own camps.
