शारद्वतस् ततो राजन् भीष्मस्य प्रमुखे स्थितम् ॥
अर्जुनं पञ्चविंशत्या सायकानां समाचिनोत् ॥
पत्युद्गम्याथ विव्याध सात्यकिस् तं शितैः शरैः ॥
पाण्डवप्रियकामार्थं शार्दूल इव कुञ्जरम् ॥
गौतमो ऽपि त्वरायुक्तो माधवं नवभिः शरैः ॥
हृदि विव्याध संक्रुद्धः कङ्कपत्रपरिच्छदैः ॥
शैनेयो ऽपि ततः क्रुद्धो भृशं विद्धो महारथः ॥
गौतमान्तकरं घोरं समादत्त शिलीमुखम् ॥
तम् आपतन्तं वेगेन शक्राशनिसमद्युतिम् ॥
द्विधा चिच्छेद संक्रुद्धो द्रौणिः परमकोपनः ॥
समुत्सृज्याथ शैनेयो गौतमं रथिनां वरम् ॥
अभ्यद्रवद् रणे द्रौणिं राहुः खे शशिनं यथा ॥
तस्य द्रोणसुतश् चापं द्विधा चिच्छेद भारत ॥
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं ताडयाम् आस सायकैः ॥
सो ऽन्यत् कार्मुकम् आदाय शत्रुघ्नं भारसाधनम् ॥
द्रौणिं षष्ट्या महाराज बाह्वोर् उरसि चार्पयत् ॥

hṛdi vivyādha saṃkruddhaḥ kaṅkapatraparicchadaiḥ ||
śaineyo 'pi tataḥ kruddho bhṛśaṃ viddho mahārathaḥ ||
gautamāntakaraṃ ghoraṃ samādatta śilīmukham ||
tam āpatantaṃ vegena śakrāśanisamadyutim ||
dvidhā ciccheda saṃkruddho drauṇiḥ paramakopanaḥ ||
samutsṛjyātha śaineyo gautamaṃ rathināṃ varam ||
abhyadravad raṇe drauṇiṃ rāhuḥ khe śaśinaṃ yathā ||
tasya droṇasutaś cāpaṃ dvidhā ciccheda bhārata ||
athainaṃ chinnadhanvānaṃ tāḍayām āsa sāyakaiḥ ||
so 'nyat kārmukam ādāya śatrughnaṃ bhārasādhanam ||
drauṇiṃ ṣaṣṭyā mahārāja bāhvor urasi cārpayat ||
Then the son of Sharadvan, O king, showered twenty-five arrows on Arjuna, who stood before Bhishma. Satyaki, advancing to meet him for the good of the Pandavas, pierced him with sharp arrows, as a tiger attacks an elephant. Gautama-Kripa, enraged, acting swiftly, pierced Madhava-Satyaki's chest with nine kanka-feathered arrows. Then Shaineya, that maharatha, sorely wounded and enraged, took up a terrible arrow meant to bring death to Gautama. But Drauni, in extreme fury, cut this arrow in two as it flew with great force, gleaming like the thunderbolt of Shakra. Then Shaineya, leaving Gautama, the finest of chariot-warriors, rushed at Drauni in battle, as Rahu rushes at the moon in the sky. The son of Drona cut his bow in two, O Bharata, and then began to strike Satyaki, now without a bow, with arrows. But he took up another sturdy bow, slayer of foes, and, great king, drove sixty arrows into the arms and chest of Drauni."

The scene quickly shifts attention from the main clash to a chain of defensive duels. Satyaki enters for the sake of the Pandavas, but each blow gives rise to a new opponent: Kripa gives way to Drauni, and the field breaks apart into a web of linked combats.
