Dhrishtadyumna again and again cried out to the armies: "Rush forward in fury upon Bhishma, mighty though he is alone! Here is Arjuna, joy of the Kurus, going into battle against Bhishma. Rush forward, do not be afraid: Bhishma will not overtake you. Even Vasava would not dare fight Arjuna in battle — what then of Bhishma, heroes, whose strength is spent and whose life is nearly done?" Hearing the general's words, the great chariot-warriors of the Pandavas rushed forward with elation toward Gangeya's chariot. Your finest warriors, elated in turn, held them back as they came on in battle like powerful floods of water. Duhshasana, great king, the great chariot-warrior, casting fear aside and wishing to preserve Bhishma's life, rushed at Dhananjaya. Likewise the valiant Pandavas rushed forward in the battle toward Gangeya's chariot, attacking your sons, the great chariot-warriors. There we saw a wonder of astonishing form, o lord of the people: Partha, having reached Duhshasana's chariot, went no further. As the shore holds back the agitated great ocean, so did your son hold back the enraged Pandava. Both were the finest of chariot-warriors, both, o Bharata, unconquerable; both resembled the moon and the sun in beauty and in radiance. Seized with fury and desiring each other's death, they clashed in the great encounter, as Maya and Shakra once did."

The push toward Bhishma is halted for a moment. The comparison of Duhshasana to a shoreline highlights this rare instance of his steadfastness: he holds Arjuna back at the very point where the whole battle strains to break through.
