संजय उवाच
ततस् ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे जग्मुः स्वान् आलयान् पुनः ॥
तूष्णींभूते महाराज भीष्मे शंतनुनन्दने ॥
श्रुत्वा तु निहतं भीष्मं राधेयः पुरुषर्षभः ॥
ईषद् आगतसंत्रासः त्वरयोपजगाम ह ॥
स ददर्श महात्मानं शरतल्पगतं तदा ॥
जन्मशय्यागतं देवं कार्त्तिकेयम् इव प्रभुम् ॥
निमीलिताक्षं तं वीरं साश्रुकण्ठस् तदा वृषः ॥
अभ्येत्य पादयोस् तस्य निपपात महाद्युतिः ॥
राधेयो ऽहं कुरुश्रेष्ठ नित्यं चाष्किगतस् तव ॥
द्वेष्यो ऽत्यन्तम् अनागाः सन्न् इति चैनम् उवाच ह ॥
तच् छ्रुत्वा कुरुवृद्धः स बलात् संवृत्तलोचनः ॥
शनैर् उद्वीक्ष्य सस्नेहम् इदं वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
रहितं धिष्ण्यम् आलोक्य समुत्सार्य च रक्षिणः ॥
पितेव पुत्रं गाङ्गेयः परिष्वज्यैकबाहुना ॥

śrutvā tu nihataṃ bhīṣmaṃ rādheyaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ||
īṣad āgatasaṃtrāsaḥ tvarayopajagāma ha ||
sa dadarśa mahātmānaṃ śaratalpagataṃ tadā ||
janmaśayyāgataṃ devaṃ kārttikeyam iva prabhum ||
nimīlitākṣaṃ taṃ vīraṃ sāśrukaṇṭhas tadā vṛṣaḥ ||
abhyetya pādayos tasya nipapāta mahādyutiḥ ||
rādheyo 'haṃ kuruśreṣṭha nityaṃ cāṣkigatas tava ||
dveṣyo 'tyantam anāgāḥ sann iti cainam uvāca ha ||
tac chrutvā kuruvṛddhaḥ sa balāt saṃvṛttalocanaḥ ||
śanair udvīkṣya sasneham idaṃ vacanam abravīt ||
rahitaṃ dhiṣṇyam ālokya samutsārya ca rakṣiṇaḥ ||
piteva putraṃ gāṅgeyaḥ pariṣvajyaikabāhunā ||
Sanjaya said: "After this, when Shantananandana Bhishma fell silent, all the kings, O great king, returned once more to their own camps. Learning that Bhishma had been struck down, Radheya, bull among men, slightly troubled, hastened forward. Then he saw the magnanimous Bhishma lying on his bed of arrows, like the mighty Karttikeya upon the bed of his birth. His throat choked with tears, that glorious hero approached and fell at his feet. 'I am Radheya, O best of the Kurus, always before your eyes, utterly hateful to you though I am innocent,' so he said to him. Hearing this, the elder of the Kurus forced his eyes open, looked at him slowly and with affection, and spoke these words. Seeing that the place was empty, and having sent away the guards, the son of Ganga embraced him with one arm, as a father embraces his son."
