विष्वग्वातहता रुग्णा नौर् इवासीन् महार्णवे ॥
बलिभिः पाण्डवैर् वीरैर् लब्धलक्षैर् भृशार्दिता ॥
सा तदासीद् भृशं सेना व्याकुलाश्वरथद्विपा ॥
विषण्णभूयिष्ठनरा कृपणा द्रष्टुम् आबभौ ॥
तस्यां त्रस्ता नृपतयः सैनिकाश् च पृथग्विधाः ॥
पाताल इव मज्जन्तो हीना देवव्रतेन ते ॥
कर्णं हि कुरवो ऽस्मार्षुः स हि देवव्रतोपमः ॥
viṣvagvātahatā rugṇā naur ivāsīn mahārṇave ||
balibhiḥ pāṇḍavair vīrair labdhalakṣair bhṛśārditā ||
sā tadāsīd bhṛśaṃ senā vyākulāśvarathadvipā ||
viṣaṇṇabhūyiṣṭhanarā kṛpaṇā draṣṭum ābabhau ||
tasyāṃ trastā nṛpatayaḥ sainikāś ca pṛthagvidhāḥ ||
pātāla iva majjanto hīnā devavratena te ||
karṇaṃ hi kuravo 'smārṣuḥ sa hi devavratopamaḥ ||
Cruelly tormented by the mighty hero-Pandavas, who struck without fail, [the army] became like a boat shattered by winds from every side in the great ocean. Then that host — with its horses, chariots, and elephants thrown into confusion, where almost all the men had lost heart — presented a pitiable sight. In it kings and warriors of every sort, terrified, bereft of Devavrata, were sinking as if into the netherworld.

A boat shattered by winds on the boundless sea is the image of an army that has lost its helmsman: while Bhishma lived, the host held its course; without him it is given over to the elements. It is telling that the Pandavas are called those who 'strike without fail' (labdhalakṣaiḥ): on the side of truth the blow lands truer, for an unseen Ruler of outcomes stands behind it. The kings sinking 'as if into the netherworld' are those who followed the unrighteous cause: their terror is the beginning of a reckoning that overtakes them even before death itself. The verse teaches that without a righteous center even the greatest strength is as helpless as a ship without a helmsman; and that in the hour of trial it becomes plain on whose side stands support from above.
