स सत्यसंगरो भूत्वा ममेदम् इति निश्चितम् ॥
कुरूणां पालय बलं यथा दुर्योधनस् तथा ॥
इति श्रुत्वा वचः सो ऽथ चरणाव् अभिवाद्य च ॥
ययौ वैकर्तनः कर्णस् तूर्णम् आयोधनं प्रति ॥

[Bhishma:] Having become thus — true to your promise, firmly holding 'this is my own [cause]' — protect the host of the Kurus as Duryodhana protects it. Having heard this speech, Karna then, having bowed to his feet, Vaikartana Karna swiftly set out for the battlefield.

'Firmly holding this is mine' — Bhishma calls on Karna to accept the defense of the host not as a hired duty but as his own vital cause: only what one honors as one's own is guarded to the end. Karna, having bowed to the grandfather's feet, departs reconciled — and in this bow their meeting comes to its close: the one who came bearing a grievance leaves with a blessing. Thus the magnanimity of a dying man healed an old rift. The verse teaches that only what is accepted by the heart as one's own is truly protected; that humility before an elder, expressed through a bow, turns grievance into concord; and that a blessing, sought and granted, sends a warrior into battle not with bitterness but with clarity of spirit — though the battle itself, to which he goes, remains unrighteous.
