यो ऽधीत्य चतुरो वेदान् सर्वान् आख्यानपञ्चमान् ॥
ब्राह्मणानां प्रतिष्ठासीत् स्रोतसाम् इव सागरः ॥
स कथं ब्राह्मणो वृद्धः शस्त्रेण वधम् आप्तवान् ॥
अमर्षणो मर्षितवान् क्लिश्यमानः सदा मया ॥
अनर्हमाणः कौन्तेयः कर्मणस् तस्य तत् फलम् ॥
yo 'dhītya caturo vedān sarvān ākhyānapañcamān ||
brāhmaṇānāṃ pratiṣṭhāsīt srotasām iva sāgaraḥ ||
sa kathaṃ brāhmaṇo vṛddhaḥ śastreṇa vadham āptavān ||
amarṣaṇo marṣitavān kliśyamānaḥ sadā mayā ||
anarhamāṇaḥ kaunteyaḥ karmaṇas tasya tat phalam ||
He who, having mastered all four Vedas together with the legends as the fifth, was a refuge for the brahmins, as the ocean is for rivers, [he has now been slain]. Kaunteya [Yudhishthira], though intolerant of insult, yet all along endured, constantly oppressed by me though undeserving of it — [and this present grief is] the fruit of that very deed [of mine].

Here, amid the lament, a rare flash of conscience breaks through: Dhritarashtra admits that he "always oppressed" Yudhishthira, who was "undeserving" of it, and that the present grief is "the fruit of that deed." For a moment the blind king glimpses the true cause of his misfortunes — not "fate," but his own wrongdoing. It is telling that the suffering Yudhishthira is called one who "endured, though intolerant of insult": the patience of the righteous man under the weight of wrongdoing itself became the seed of retribution. The verse teaches that misfortunes are rooted not in impersonal fate but in trampled righteousness; that the oppression of a patient, righteous man returns to the oppressor as its fruit; and that even a hardened heart, in the hour of great grief, glimpses its own guilt for a moment — though, as what follows will show, this insight will not hold.
