द्रोणः पाञ्चालराजानं विद्ध्वा दशभिर् आशुगैः ॥
बहुभिस् तेन चाभ्यस्तस् तं विव्याध शताधिकैः ॥
विविंशतिं भीमसेनो विंशत्या निशितैः शरैः ॥
विद्ध्वा नाकम्पयद् वीरस् तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
विविंशतिस् तु सहसा व्यश्वकेतुशरासनम् ॥
भीमं चक्रे महाराज ततः सैन्यान्य् अपूजयन् ॥
स तन् न ममृषे वीरः शत्रोर् विजयम् आहवे ॥
ततो ऽस्य गदया दान्तान् हयान् सर्वान् अपातयत् ॥

bhīmaṃ cakre mahārāja tataḥ sainyāny apūjayan ||
sa tan na mamṛṣe vīraḥ śatror vijayam āhave ||
tato 'sya gadayā dāntān hayān sarvān apātayat ||
Drona, having struck the king of Panchala [Drupada] with ten swift arrows and being himself struck by him in abundance, struck him back with arrows numbering over a hundred. Bhimasena, having struck Vivinshati with twenty sharp arrows, did not make him, the hero, flinch — and this seemed a marvel. But Vivinshati suddenly rendered Bhima, O great king, bereft of horses, standard, and bow; then the armies acclaimed him. That hero [Bhima] did not brook his enemy's triumph in battle — and thereupon with his mace he slaughtered all his [Vivinshati's] well-trained horses.

It is marvelous that Vivinshati "did not flinch" under twenty of Bhima's arrows and even for a moment prevailed over him: even the mightiest meets a worthy match, and victory passes from hand to hand. Bhima "could not brook his enemy's triumph" — and in this impulse his nature shows itself: fiery, unable to bear humiliation. Yet the tale notes without flinching his momentary defeat as well: true greatness lies not in never stumbling, but in rising at once. The verse teaches that even the mightiest is not immune to a fleeting reverse; that the changeability of battle humbles the pride of invincibility; and that valor is known not in unclouded superiority, but in how a warrior answers his own setback.
