संजय उवाच
सादितं प्रेक्ष्य यन्तारं शल्यः सर्वायषीं गदाम् ॥
समुत्क्षिप्य नदन् क्रुद्धः प्रचस्कन्द रथोत्तमात् ॥
तं दीप्तम् इव कालाग्निं दण्डहस्तम् इवान्तकम् ॥
जवेनाभ्यपतद् भीमः प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् ॥
सौभद्रो ऽप्य् अशनिप्रख्यां प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् ॥
एह्य् एहीत्य् अब्रवीच् छल्यं यत्नाद् भीमेन वारितः ॥

sāditaṃ prekṣya yantāraṃ śalyaḥ sarvāyaṣīṃ gadām ||
samutkṣipya nadan kruddhaḥ pracaskanda rathottamāt ||
taṃ dīptam iva kālāgniṃ daṇḍahastam ivāntakam ||
javenābhyapatad bhīmaḥ pragṛhya mahatīṃ gadām ||
saubhadro 'py aśaniprakhyāṃ pragṛhya mahatīṃ gadām ||
ehy ehīty abravīc chalyaṃ yatnād bhīmena vāritaḥ ||
Seeing his charioteer struck down, Shalya, enraged, flinging up his all-iron mace, leapt down from his excellent chariot with a battle cry. Upon him — blazing like the fire of Time [the fire of doom], like Antaka [Death] with a staff in hand — Bhima rushed swiftly, having raised his enormous mace. Saubhadra [Abhimanyu] too, having raised an enormous mace resembling a thunderbolt, shouted to Shalya, "Come, come here!" — but was barely held back by Bhima.

Bhima "barely restrains" the eager Abhimanyu, straining toward battle, shielding him with his own body: the elder takes the blow upon himself, guarding the young. Here is the law of love and seniority: the strongest and eldest goes first into danger, not the ardent youth. It is telling that Abhimanyu calls to the enemy "come, come!" — the daring of youth knows no fear, yet needs the bridle of experience. The verse teaches that the valor of the young must be guarded by the discernment of the elder; that love shows itself in the readiness to shield the younger with one's own body; and that Bhima, restraining his nephew and himself facing the terrible Shalya, fulfills the duty of the elder — to meet trouble before those who are younger and dearer.
