नानावादित्रनिनदैः क्ष्वेडितोत्क्रुष्टगर्जितैः ॥
हुंकारैः सिंहनादैश् च तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति निस्वनैः ॥
घोरैर् हलहलाशब्दैर् मा गास् तिष्ठैहि माम् इति ॥
असाव् अहम् अमुत्रेति प्रवदन्तो मुहुर् मुहुः ॥
बृंहितैः शिञ्जितैर् हासैः खुरनेमिस्वनैर् अपि ॥
संनादयन्तो वसुधाम् अभिदुद्रुवुर् आर्जुनिम् ॥
nānāvāditraninadaiḥ kṣveḍitotkruṣṭagarjitaiḥ ||
huṃkāraiḥ siṃhanādaiś ca tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti nisvanaiḥ ||
ghorair halahalāśabdair mā gās tiṣṭhaihi mām iti ||
asāv aham amutreti pravadanto muhur muhuḥ ||
bṛṃhitaiḥ śiñjitair hāsaiḥ khuranemisvanair api ||
saṃnādayanto vasudhām abhidudruvur ārjunim ||
With the sounds of every kind of music, with whooping, shouting, and roaring, with the fierce «hum» and lion-roars, with fearsome cries of «Stand, stand!», with the din of «halahala», with shouts of «You will not escape! Stand! Approach me!», «Here I am, over there!» — shouting out time and again, and making the earth resound with trumpet-blasts, jingling, laughter, and the clatter of hooves and wheel-rims, they sped at the son of Arjuna.

Before their blows, the enemies unleash upon the youth an avalanche of noise: whooping, roaring, threats of 'stand, you will not escape!' This clamor is a weapon of intimidation, meant to break the spirit before the body. It is telling that this whole cacophony of the many is raised against a single youth — sheer numbers strain to deafen and overwhelm. The verse teaches that intimidation by voice is the first weapon of the crowd against the solitary; that the many, unsure of overcoming valor, strain at least to drown it out with noise; and that the fearsome roar of the multitude, unleashed upon one, betrays not strength but the need of numbers to take by force what valor will not yield — for the truly strong strike in silence, while it is the one who wishes to hide his fear of a lone brave man behind noise who shouts.
