गन्धर्वनगराकारान् विधिवत् कल्पितान् रथान् ॥
वीषामुखान् वित्रिवेणून् व्यस्तदण्डकबन्धुरान् ॥
विजङ्घकूबराक्षांश् च विनेमीन् अनरान् अपि ॥
विचक्रोपस्करोपस्थान् भग्नोपकरणान् अपि ॥
प्रशातितोपकरणान् हतयोधान् सहस्रशः ॥
शरैर् विशकलीकुर्वन् दिक्षु सर्वास्व् अदृश्यत ॥

vīṣāmukhān vitriveṇūn vyastadaṇḍakabandhurān ||
vijaṅghakūbarākṣāṃś ca vinemīn anarān api ||
vicakropaskaropasthān bhagnopakaraṇān api ||
praśātitopakaraṇān hatayodhān sahasraśaḥ ||
śarair viśakalīkurvan dikṣu sarvāsv adṛśyata ||
Chariots, appearing like phantom cities of the gandharvas, skillfully fitted out — with broken poles, with shattered uprights, with scattered rods and bodies, with broken axles and shafts, without rims, empty, without wheels, fittings, or platforms, with broken equipment, with shattered equipment, with slain warriors by the thousands — shattering them into splinters with his arrows, he appeared to view on every side.

Fitted-out chariots, "like phantom cities of the gandharvas," are smashed into splinters: all the massive splendor of the army proves as fleeting as a mirage, scattering before the boy's arrows. The long enumeration of dismembered parts — poles, axles, wheels, chariot-bodies — shows the complete collapse of what had been ordered and whole. It is significant that the mirage-city is chosen as the image for war-gear: beautiful and fragile alike. The verse teaches that all outward might — equipment, number, mass — is but a phantom city, crumbling to dust; that of well-ordered array only wreckage remains; and that one boy, scattering thousands of chariots like a mirage, exposes the vanity of all martial splendor, fair to see and frail in essence, like the city of the gandharvas that seems to hang in the sky and then dissolves.
