संजय उवाच
यन् मा पृच्छसि राजेन्द्र सिन्धुराजस्य विक्रमम् ॥
शृणु तत् सर्वम् आख्यास्ये यथा पाण्डून् अयोधयत् ॥
तम् ऊहुः सारथेर् वश्याः सैन्धवाः साधुवाहिनः ॥
विकुर्वाणा बृहन्तो ऽश्वाः श्वसनोपमरंहसः ॥
गन्धर्वनगराकारं विधिवत् कल्पितं रथम् ॥
तस्याभ्यशोभयत् केतुर् वाराहो राजतो महान् ॥
श्वेतच्छत्रपताकाभिश् चामरव्यजनेन च ॥
स बभौ राजलिङ्गैस् तैस् तारापतिर् इवाम्बरे ॥
मुक्तावज्रमणिस्वर्णैर् भूषितं तद् अयस्मयम् ॥
वरूथं विबभौ तस्य ज्योतिर्भिः खम् इवावृतम् ॥

yan mā pṛcchasi rājendra sindhurājasya vikramam ||
śṛṇu tat sarvam ākhyāsye yathā pāṇḍūn ayodhayat ||
tam ūhuḥ sārather vaśyāḥ saindhavāḥ sādhuvāhinaḥ ||
vikurvāṇā bṛhanto 'śvāḥ śvasanopamaraṃhasaḥ ||
gandharvanagarākāraṃ vidhivat kalpitaṃ ratham ||
tasyābhyaśobhayat ketur vārāho rājato mahān ||
śvetacchatrapatākābhiś cāmaravyajanena ca ||
sa babhau rājaliṅgais tais tārāpatir ivāmbare ||
muktāvajramaṇisvarṇair bhūṣitaṃ tad ayasmayam ||
varūthaṃ vibabhau tasya jyotirbhiḥ kham ivāvṛtam ||
As for what you ask me, O lord of kings — of the valor of the king of Sindhu — hearken: all of it I shall tell, how he fought with the Pandavas. He was borne by the obedient Sindhu horses of his charioteer, well-mannered in the ride, tall, prancing, swift as the wind. His chariot, shaped like a city of the gandharvas, skillfully equipped, was crowned by a banner bearing a great silver boar. With a white parasol and flags, with a chamara fan, he shone with those royal insignia like the moon in the sky. Decked with pearls, diamonds, gems, and gold, that iron chariot-shield shone like a sky strewn with stars.

The narrative dwells admiringly on Jayadratha's splendor — the silver boar, the white parasol, the gems, the shining like the moon and the starry sky. But behind all this brilliance stands a fateful role: all this royal beauty serves only to seal the boy's doom. It is telling that the majesty of the adornment does not sanctify the deed it serves. The verse teaches that outward splendor and royal insignia do not by themselves testify to the rightness of the one who bears them; that pomp can clothe both the fateful and the ruinous; and that wise is the one who discerns, behind the shining of adornment, the substance of the deed — for the most beautiful in appearance, Jayadratha's silver boar beneath the white parasol, is here raised up for an atrocity, and its brilliance only sets off the darkness of what is about to unfold.
