गदाश् च शैक्याः परिघाश् च शुभ्रा; रथेषु शक्त्यश् च विवर्तमानाः ॥
प्रतिप्रभा रश्मिभिर् आजमीढ; पुनः पुनः संजनयन्ति दीप्ताः ॥
छत्राणि बालव्यजनानुषङ्गा; दीप्ता महोल्काश् च तथैव राजन् ॥
व्याघूर्णमानाश् च सुवर्णमाला; व्यायच्छतां तत्र तदा विरेजुः ॥
शस्त्रप्रभाभिश् च विराजमानं; दीपप्रभाभिश् च तदा बलं तत् ॥
प्रकाशितं चाभरणप्रभाभिर्; भृशं प्रकाशं नृपते बभूव ॥
पीतानि शस्त्राण्य् असृगुक्षितानि; वीरावधूतानि तनुद्रुहाणि ॥
दीप्तां प्रभां प्राजनयन्त तत्र; तपात्यये विद्युद् इवान्तरिक्षे ॥
gadāś ca śaikyāḥ parighāś ca śubhrā; ratheṣu śaktyaś ca vivartamānāḥ ||
pratiprabhā raśmibhir ājamīḍha; punaḥ punaḥ saṃjanayanti dīptāḥ ||
chatrāṇi bālavyajanānuṣaṅgā; dīptā maholkāś ca tathaiva rājan ||
vyāghūrṇamānāś ca suvarṇamālā; vyāyacchatāṃ tatra tadā virejuḥ ||
śastraprabhābhiś ca virājamānaṃ; dīpaprabhābhiś ca tadā balaṃ tat ||
prakāśitaṃ cābharaṇaprabhābhir; bhṛśaṃ prakāśaṃ nṛpate babhūva ||
pītāni śastrāṇy asṛgukṣitāni; vīrāvadhūtāni tanudruhāṇi ||
dīptāṃ prabhāṃ prājanayanta tatra; tapātyaye vidyud ivāntarikṣe ||
Maces on their slings and bright clubs, and spears whirling upon the chariots, gave birth again and again, blazing, to reflections by rays, O Ajamidha. Parasols joined with yak-tail fans and blazing great torches, O king, and the swaying golden garlands of those contending there then shone. Shining with the glow of weapons and the glow of lamps, that army, illumined too by the glow of ornaments, became exceedingly bright, O lord. Gilded weapons besprinkled with blood, brandished by heroes, wounding the flesh, gave birth there to a blazing glow, like lightning in the sky at the passing of the heat.

Radiance multiplies in reflection: the lamps' rays play on weapons, ornaments, garlands -- light begets light. And in the same breath, amid this beauty, the weapons are called "besprinkled with blood" and "wounding the flesh": splendor and death are inseparable. It is telling that the comparison is to lightning at the passing of the heat -- a beauty that heralds a storm. The verse teaches that the earthly splendor of battle is deceptively fair: the very glow that charms the eye issues from instruments that cut into living flesh.
