Then from it [the cloud] came forth lightnings and blazing meteors, O lord of the Kurus, and another most fearsome sound arose — of thousands of roaring kettledrums. Then fell golden-feathered arrows, spears, javelins, clubs, weapons, axes and oil-polished swords, battle-axes with blazing points and javelins. Radiant maces bound with iron, many-colored maces and sharp-edged spears, heavy maces wrapped in gold, and shataghnis appeared on every side. And huge boulders fell here and there by the thousands, together with thunderbolts and lightning, and discuses with many hundreds of blades appeared, blazing like fire.

The rakshasa's sorcery hurls down from the sky a rain of every weapon and boulder and lightning bolt: the battle becomes the semblance of the end of the world. It is telling that this is no natural storm but a wrought illusion — evil dressed in the guise of the elements. The verse teaches that unrighteous power strains to seize for itself the might of the very heavens, conjuring a man-made 'end of the world'; but the phantom storm, however fearsome, remains a deception — and will scatter before a single true blow.
