Hudas, bhushundis, stone-balls, shataghnis, and posts bound with black iron rained down on your son's army; and dread confusion arose. With spilled entrails, with heads struck off, with shattered limbs the heroes lie there; horses are split and elephants broken, and chariots crushed by rocks. Thus creating a great rain of weapons, those yatudhanas, dread of form upon the earth — conjurings created there by Ghatotkacha — spared neither the one pleading nor the one afraid. In that dread slaughter of the heroes of Kuru, as if sent by Time in the destruction of kshatriyas, they, broken, suddenly fled, all the Kauravas crying out.

The phantoms of Ghatotkacha "spare neither the one pleading nor the one afraid" — such is the law of the rakshasa, alien to the kshatriya mercy shown to those who surrender. It is telling that the carnage is called "sent by Time": fate has measured out death for the kshatriyas. The verse teaches that there is a ferocity that knows no mercy, before which warrior honor stands defenseless; and when forces without measure or compassion enter the field, the battlefield turns into a slaughterhouse where neither plea nor fear saves anyone.
