तम् अधर्मेण धर्मिष्ठं धृष्टद्युम्नेन संयुगे ॥
श्रुत्वा निहतम् आचार्यम् अश्वत्थामा किम् अब्रवीत् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य यो मृत्युः सृष्टस् तेन महात्मना ॥
यथा द्रोणस्य पाञ्चाल्यो यज्ञसेनसुतो ऽभवत् ॥
तं नृशंसेन पापेन क्रूरेणात्यल्पदर्शिना ॥
श्रुत्वा निहतम् आचार्यम् अश्वत्थामा किम् अब्रवीत् ॥
tam adharmeṇa dharmiṣṭhaṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnena saṃyuge ||
śrutvā nihatam ācāryam aśvatthāmā kim abravīt ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya yo mṛtyuḥ sṛṣṭas tena mahātmanā ||
yathā droṇasya pāñcālyo yajñasenasuto 'bhavat ||
taṃ nṛśaṃsena pāpena krūreṇātyalpadarśinā ||
śrutvā nihatam ācāryam aśvatthāmā kim abravīt ||
That most righteous one, unrighteously slain by Dhrishtadyumna in battle — having heard that the Acharya was slain, what did Ashvatthaman say? He who was fashioned as the death of Dhrishtadyumna by that great Creator — just as, for Drona's death, the Panchalian, the son of Yajnasena [Dhrishtadyumna], came into being — having heard that he [Drona] was slain by one cruel, sinful, fierce, and most shortsighted, having heard that the Acharya was slain, what did Ashvatthaman say?

Dhritarashtra notes a bitter symmetry: as Dhrishtadyumna was born to be Drona's death, so now Ashvatthaman will become Dhrishtadyumna's death. This chain of fates is telling — each offspring of vengeance itself begets an avenger. The verse teaches that violence breeds violence by an unrelenting law: the killer himself calls his own killer into being; and the wheel of enmity, once set turning, grinds down all who entered it.
