वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय मुसलं घोरम् आयसम् ॥
वासुदेवस्य दायादः साम्बो ऽयं जनयिष्यति ॥
येन यूयं सुदुर्वृत्ता नृशंसा जातमन्यवः ॥
उच्छेत्तारः कुलं कृत्स्नम् ऋते रामजनार्दनौ ॥
समुद्रं यास्यति श्रीमांस् त्यक्त्वा देहं हलायुधः ॥
जरा कृष्णं महात्मानं शयानं भुवि भेत्स्यति ॥
इत्य् अब्रुवन्त ते राजन् प्रलब्धास् तैर् दुरात्मभिः ॥
मुनयः क्रोधरक्ताक्षाः समीक्ष्याथ परस्परम् ॥
vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya musalaṃ ghoram āyasam ||
vāsudevasya dāyādaḥ sāmbo 'yaṃ janayiṣyati ||
yena yūyaṃ sudurvṛttā nṛśaṃsā jātamanyavaḥ ||
ucchettāraḥ kulaṃ kṛtsnam ṛte rāmajanārdanau ||
samudraṃ yāsyati śrīmāṃs tyaktvā dehaṃ halāyudhaḥ ||
jarā kṛṣṇaṃ mahātmānaṃ śayānaṃ bhuvi bhetsyati ||
ity abruvanta te rājan pralabdhās tair durātmabhiḥ ||
munayaḥ krodharaktākṣāḥ samīkṣyātha parasparam ||
'This heir of Vasudeva, Samba, will bring forth a terrible iron club for the destruction of the Vrishnis and Andhakas — with which you, who have acted wickedly, cruel ones seized by wrath, will exterminate the entire clan, save for Rama and Janardana. The glorious Wielder of the Plough will depart into the ocean, having abandoned his body; and Jara will strike down the great-souled Krishna as he lies upon the earth.' Thus spoke those sages, O king, deceived by those evil-minded ones, their eyes red with wrath, as they glanced at one another.

The sages' curse pronounces not their malicious will but the vision of the inevitable: they behold the club, the mutual slaughter, Balarama's departure into the ocean, and Krishna's end by the arrow of the hunter Jara. The word of the wrathful righteous becomes the voice of destiny. Significantly, even Krishna's own departure — 'Jara will strike him as he lies upon the earth' — is foretold as part of a single design: the Lord will conceal His form not from powerlessness, but at the appointed hour, completing His lila. The verse teaches that the curse of the holy does not create evil arbitrarily, but announces and sets in motion what has been foreordained; and that even the Lord's concealment of His earthly body is woven into this Providence — not as defeat, but as the free completion of His manifestation in the world.
