श्वोभूते ऽथ ततः साम्बो मुसलं तद् असूत वै ॥
वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय किंकरप्रतिमं महत् ॥
प्रसूतं शापजं घोरं तच् च राज्ञे न्यवेदयन् ॥
विषण्णरूपस् तद् राजा सूक्ष्मं चूर्णम् अकारयत् ॥
प्राक्षिपन् सागरे तच् च पुरुषा राजशासनात् ॥
अघोषयंश् च नगरे वचनाद् आहुकस्य च ॥

vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya kiṃkarapratimaṃ mahat ||
prasūtaṃ śāpajaṃ ghoraṃ tac ca rājñe nyavedayan ||
viṣaṇṇarūpas tad rājā sūkṣmaṃ cūrṇam akārayat ||
prākṣipan sāgare tac ca puruṣā rājaśāsanāt ||
aghoṣayaṃś ca nagare vacanād āhukasya ca ||
On the next day, Samba then brought forth that club for the destruction of the Vrishnis and Andhakas — mighty as a messenger of death. The terrible thing born of the curse was reported to the king; the grieved king commanded it to be ground into fine powder. And by the king's command, men cast it into the ocean and proclaimed it throughout the city by the word of Ahuka.

The curse is fulfilled literally: from the womb of the disguised Samba is born an iron club — the visible instrument of ordained destruction. The king, grieved, attempts to avert the calamity by human means — he has the club ground to powder and sunk into the sea. But what has been foretold by the word of the holy and permitted by the Lord cannot be averted by cunning: the ground iron itself will yet become an instrument of doom. The verse teaches that what has been ordained by the supreme will cannot be annulled by human devices, for fate finds its fulfillment even through the very means by which men think to prevent it; and that wisdom lies not in futile struggle against the inevitable, but in humble acceptance of the will from above — whereas blind resistance merely delays, but does not annul, what has been appointed.
