The listing shifts to ornaments: a crown, earrings, a necklace. The turn made here is subtle, and yet significant. Until now the seeds were worn as a sign; now they are set into adornments, that is, worn as decoration.
The difference between the two deserves stating, for it is easily glossed over. A sign is worn to remember and to belong; an ornament is worn to be seen. The object may be one and the same, and outwardly indistinguishable — the difference lies entirely in intent.
Here, to my mind, lies the chief danger of any object of piety, and it is not at all that the object "doesn't work." The danger is that a person grows attached to the object and imperceptibly begins to serve it, rather than that for whose sake the object was taken up. The Vaiṣṇava side speaks of this with complete clarity and spares none of its own. Its books call kaniṣṭha-adhikārī, "lowest in capacity," the one who honors an image but "does not serve devotees and does not discern" (Bhāgavatam 11.2.47); and the mark of the highest is named not adornment, but that a person sees the Lord in everything and everything in Him.
These grades are set not to demean the lower, but so that he may know where he stands. To wear seeds in earrings is no sin; the sin is thinking that this concludes the matter.
